12:30 – Ferrer v Ljubicic
Rankings are 11 and 17. Head to heads are 5-1 to Ferrer although only 1 of those matches wasn’t on clay ( Ferrer won that one).
Ferrer has been very impressive this week and whilst I expected him to give Soderling some problems I never expected Ferrer to beat him so easily.
Ljubicic is the surprise semi finalist. He has been playing well over recent weeks but has lacked staying power. He has found a new lease of life this week beating Youzhny, then up and coming Dolgopolov and then despatching a disappointing Murray in the quarter final. All threee matches were completed in straight sets.
Ljubicic’s serve has been very consistent and effective. His second serve is still a weakness although has been better than normal. His ground strokes have been fantastic too.
Ferrer has shown this week that he is in superb form and as he holds serve 83% of the time he can be backed on serve.
Ferrer’s a very smart player and knows how to wear his opponent down and that is what I expect to happen in this match. Ljubicic has performed wonders this week but he will need to be ultra consistent against the Spaniard and he will make mistakes.
Back Ferrer on serve or from the start. I expect a straight sets win.
