So yesterday saw a few favourites losing. Mayer, Monaco, Ferrer and Tipsarevic (ret ) all left the tournament on the men’s side. In the women’s draw Bartoli, Goerges, Cibulkova (ret) and Vinci all secured themselves a few days rest.
At times in her match with Barthel Kvitova looks pretty tired. Not surprising following a quarter final In London followed by taking the title last week in the Rogers Cup. Barthel took the opening set thanks mainly to a lot of errors from Kvitova although the German hit a few amazing winners. A smarter more consistent player would probably have taken the match but Barthel is neither of those things. In the third set she was a break up and managed to choke it away.
I would have preferred to see Kvitova against someone other than Peng although I did underestimate her yesterday.
They have only met once which was in London a couple of weeks ago and Peng, who has more than a passing resemblance to Mary from Coronation Street, took Kvitova to 3 sets.
I think it’s worth laying Kvitova here and hoping Peng can show the consistency she showed against Vinci.
Venus Williams was another player who showed signs of fatigue. She had also looked weary in the previous round against Kirilenko. Sheer fighting spirit dragged her to the third round. How much has she got left?
Errani hasn’t been in the best of form and was beaten by Venus in London. The American dominated that match from start to finish.
Errani will be the fitter player and i fancy her to take at least a set today. A 3 setter would favour her. Hopefully Venus can get a break of serve while she still has some energy and we can lay around 1.25.
