Cincinnati 2012, Wednesday

Vinci and Peng have played just once before which was back in 2007. Vinci won that in 3 sets.

Both players are in good form. Peng won against Jankovic in the last round playing and serving fairly consistently. Vinci reached the quarter finals last week at the Rogers Cup beating Wickmayer, Ivanovic ( 6-0, 6-0 ) and Kerber.

Peng is more comfortable with long base line rallies. Vinci’s sliced backhand which limits her against a lot of players will be used a great deal today for drop shots to expose Peng’s poor movement.

I think it’s quite likely that we see a price over evens on Vinci but I expect her to come through a tight match.

Update: I was right about the initial move on Vinci but had underestimated Peng.

Peng won 6-3, 6-4.

Raonic’s serve held strong against an in form Gasquet in the last round. Baghdatis is a tough opponent on the American hard courts.

Their previous match in October last year finished with Raonic winning 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. Both players are serving well and I expect another tight encounter. Neither player returns well against a big server ad in fact Baghdatis has lost 5 of his last 6 matches when up against a big server.

Backing Raonic on serve should be fine until Raonic breaks serve ( his price will then be too low).

I would expect Raonic to come through, probably with at least 1 tie break.

Update: The expected tie break came in the first set although both players had problems on their own serves. It was Baghdatis who took the breaker though. Raonic came back to win in 3 sets.

Raonic won 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Monaco has won the last 2 meetings with Stepanek but he trails the head to heads 3-2. Both players make themselves difficult to beat. Monaco has the weaker serve which has broken down several times recently. Stepanek will need his serve to be at its best today as Monaco just never gives up.

Monaco’s 2 wins over Stepanek were straight sets but I expect to see 3 sets today. It will take a poor performance from Monaco to allow Stepanek the victory and I think the Argentinian will wear down his opponent to take the win.

Update: Two very different sets. The first had six breaks of serve with four consecutive breaks in a row. Stepanek finally took the set in a tie break. In the second set Monaco continued to serve poorly but Stepanek won 100% of points on his first serve.

Stepanek won 7-6, 6-1.
