Just 2 weeks to go until the US Open. I have put a count down clock over on the right hand side of this page 🙂
Cincinnati this week and I expect everyone to be giving 100% ( injuries permitting ).
Ok I am a little later than intended. I got caught up in the test match! I think it has been the best I have traded a test so didn’t want to take my eye off it.
Almagro needs a good run this week to get himself ready for the US Open where last year he reached the 4th round. His opponent today is Dimitrov.
They have played just once before which was at last year’s Australian Open. Almagro won in 5 sets.
Both players lost in the first round last week but Dimitrov also played in Washington and reached the quarter finals before losing out to Tommy Haas in 2 tie break sets. That extra time on hard courts may help Dimitrov.
Almagro hits more aces per season than almost any other player. That serve wasn’t rally firing against Stepanek last week but if he has been able to find it on the practice courts he has a great chance today. He is likely to be the more aggressive player as Dimitrov can be a little timid against the top players at times.
Almagro in 3 sets. I will look to lay Dimitrov if he goes a break up.
Update:Both players started well and I actually felt Almagro was the better player in the early games. However it was Dimitrov who broke first and we got our lay at 1.45 . Almagro broke back but Dimitrov took the set in a tie break.
The second set was just as tight but Dimitrov took it to win 7-6, 6-4.
Sloane Stephens made a lethargic start to her match with Radwanska last week. If she can do the same against Martic we could see a more attractive backing price than her SP of 1.46 .
I haven’t been overly impressed with Martic lately and while she has the game to trouble Stephens she hasn’t been able to perform well for sustained periods of matches.
Update: Just to be awkward Stephens started well and then lost the second set! (good if you’re a wins a set subscriber! )
Stephens won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
I still think Mattek Sands has the ability to beat Vinci if she can hold her game together. They played recently in Carlsbad and it was a fairly easy win for the Italian making the head to head 3-0. Sands needs to serve well and if she has one of her inspired days she can hit Vinci off the court.
I will lay Vinci if she goes a break up.
Update: Vinci was almost broken at the start of the match but it was the Italian who actually broke first. She took the set and then went a break up in set 2 but Sands finally justified my faith in her as she came back to take the set.
Vinci won 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Melzer has obviously been poor and has reportedly been playing with strong pain medication. He does have a good style of play for hard courts though. His opponent today is Monaco who has improved his hard court game but still has a much weaker record on the surface than Melzer.
Monaco has had issues recently when leading on his favoured clay so I think we have a good chance of him doing the same on the faster courts where he isn’t a natural.
I will lay Monaco if he takes the lead early.
Update: Monaco broke straight away and Melzer broke straight back! I did leave most of my green on Melzer but he did me no favours.
Monaco won 6-3, 6-2.
