Cincinnati 2013 – Semi Finals

Another eventful day yesterday. Djokovic  fell to big serving Isner in 3 sets. Murray just didn’t show up against Berdych. If he didn’t give 100% so he could concentrate on his defence of the US Open title then I’m not sure its a wise decision. He still has a week to rest up and finish preparations.

Then last night we saw an almost vintage set from Federer. In the last week or so any player I tip against plays an inspired match. I had tipped Vinci to beat Jankovic who had really struggled with her serve in her last 2 matches. Not this time. She played possibly the set of her season with a first serve at an incredible 80%. Last night I had tipped Nadal at 1.60 but the way Federer played that opening set and most of the second I wasn’t too hopeful. However Nadal found a way and a  late break snatched the set from Fed. The third set was all Nadal especially in the early games and whilst Federer nearly staged a comeback in the final game it was Nadal who took the win.

Del Potro and Isner met recently in Washington. Isner took the first set after Del Potro had a single bad service game. Del Potro had struggled to read the Isner serve but showed signs of working it out in the last game of that first set and almost broke. In the next set it was obvious that he had worked it out and it looked to be just a matter of time before which he broke. he did so early and the second and third sets were very one sided.

That set for Isner was the only one he has managed to win in 4 meetings. However Del Potro has gone to sleep in the second set of his last 2 matches and I’m not convinced he is fully concentrating this week.

Isner is service well enough this week to have a chance of winning and even though Del Potro worked him out in their last match I was surprised that the Argentinian wasn’t able to put more pressure on Tursunov in their first 2 sets.

Del Potro is rightly the favourite and the starting price of 1.60 is about right but unless he is focused for the whole match Isner could pull off another big win.

Update: Probably the point you need to concentrate most on is match point. Del Potro double faulted on match point and not only was he broken but he lost the set and eventually the match.

Isner won 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.

Berdych has won just 2 sets in his last 14 matches against Nadal. I feel that Federer gave Nadal the work out he needed. Even though Dimitrov also took him to 3 Federer was playing at such a high level especially in the first set that this win has fine tuned Nadal’s game in time to produce another convincing win over Berdych. Don’t read too much into the Murray match. Andy was a shadow of his normal self but Berdych got the job done well.

Berdych will need a lapse in concentration from Nadal for him to take a set.

Update: Nadal won 7-5, 7-6.

Serena starts very low against Li Na. She leads the head to heads 7-1 but in all her wins there were never less than 21 games.and there have been 7 tie breaks so hopefully we see some close sets. Williams hasn’t been at her best all week but you’d expect her to be more focused for the semi and I expect her to take it in 2 sets.

Update: Hmm too many expects in that last sentence!

Williams won 7-5, 7-5.

If Jankovic can reproduce the form that she showed in the opening set of her match with Vinci then this could be close. probably a lay of Azarenka below 1.15 isn’t a bad place to start. She was more controlled against Rybarikova and played within herself. She was put under pressure last night by Wozniacki and came through a match that I had expected to go the distance.but was over in 2.

Update: Jankovic managed another good opening set but Azarenka took it in 3.

Azarenka won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
