Awful day for Shark tips with Gulbis and Cibulkova unwilling to put the effort in, Ivanovic losing from a set and 5-2 up and Stepanek losing in a third set tie break! At least that’s all the bad luck out of the way in one go.
Excellent day for the Wins a Set though and my own trading was inspired to put it mildly. Let’s see what today brings.
Tommy Haas is way too low at 1.33 against Granollers who beat him in Indian Wells last year. Haas won their other 2 meetings and the most recent was on the grass in Halle last year. That was won in 2 close sets.
As long as Haas is fit ( he retired with a shoulder injury last week) then I’d expect him to get the win but Granollers should make it a long tough match for the German and i expect him to trade higher.
Update: Easy win for Haas 6-4, 6-1.
Cornet and Rybarikova start at evens and I aren’t surprised one bit. Both have had some excellent results in recent weeks and Rybarikova in particular really should be ready for a rest. She isn’t showing any signs of that though and she came through a tough 3 setter with Goerges in the last round. Goerges has been dire lately but played a lot better in that match. We might get some excellent value on her in the next couple of tournaments.
Cornet almost went into meltdown in her recent match with Errani but even that day she almost made a miraculous comeback in the second set from 1-5 to get to set point but couldn’t take it. Against Ivanovic last night she was a set and 2-5 down and came back to win. I think that result was as much down to Ivanovic choking as anything else but Cornet player her part.
I am siding with Rybarikova in this one. Cornet is an implosion waiting to happen. Rybarikova is serving well and her return stats are only just below those of Cornet. I expect her to last the course much better.
Update: Cornet took the first set and took a 5-2 lead in the second set. Rybarikova fought back with the next 5 games to take the set.
In set 3 Rybarikova went into a 4-0 lead but it was Cornet’s turn to stage a comeback. She got the match back on serve but serving at 5-6 she was broken.
Rybarikova won 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Venus Williams was given all sorts of trouble by Cepelova in her last match. Vesnina beat her at last year’s Wimbledon in straight sets. Both are playing better now than they were then but I can see Williams having a few more problems.
Prior to the win over Cepelova Williams had lost her last 3 matches with the only set being a bagel against Flipkens.
Vesnina started poorly against Flipkens herself in the first round but really took control in the 2nd and 3rd sets.
If I can lay Williams when she is a break ahead I will take it.
Update: Vesnina won 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
