Davis Cup Semi Finals – Sunday

Great Britain lead 2-1 in their tie with Australia.

The tie is being played in Scotland which gives Murray and also brother Jamie an extra boost.

On Friday Murray comfortably beat Kokkinakis in straight sets. In the other singles match Dan Evans started as huge underdog against Tomic. The Aussie won the match but Evans kept the sets tight and took the third set in a tie break.

Saturday is doubles day in Davis Cup ties and it was the Murray brothers taking on Groth and Hewitt.  The British pair lost the opening set but moved on to take the next 2 sets. A close tie break in the 4th set went to Australia.  An early break in the 5th set saw Britain on their way to a 3-0 lead but the Aussies pulled back to 3-3. They stayed on serve until the Aussies, serving at 4-5 were broken.

So today Britain need to win just 1 of the potential 2 singles matches. First up is Murray v Tomic.

They have played twice before. Both matches were on hard courts and Murray won them in straight sets. He is playing in Scotland for a place in the Davis Cup final. Playing for his country means so much for him. The support will be incredible.

Murray is obviously no stranger to huge matches and it hard to imagine that e will lose today. Tomic is having a strong season on hard courts and it won’t be a great shock if he nicks a set but the most likely outcome is a 3-0 win for Murray.

If Murray does slip up the tie will be settled by Dan Evans’ match with Kokkinakis. The Aussies may change their player but we know Evans will fight all the way. Kokkinakis would be a very tough opponent for Evans but stranger things have happened.

The last time Great Britain were in the final was in 1978 when they lost to the USA.

If they make it there this time they will play the winner from the tie between  Belgium and Argentina.

Argentina lead 2-1.

In the opening match on Friday Goffin beat Delbonis in 3 tight sets. Delbonis doesn’t play his best tennis on hard courts.

The second singles match was really tight, Mayer won the first two sets in tie breaks. Darcis took the third set with a single break but Mayer finished the job in the 4th set.

The doubles was never going to be easy for Belgium. Argentina have a lot of experience on their team. Bemmelmans and Darcis fought so hard but in the end Berlocq and Mayer were just too strong. The Argentines won  in 4 sets, 6-2, 7-6, 5-7, 7-6.

This tie is far from over. The first match today is Goffin against Leo Mayer.

They have played once before. That was last season on a hard court in Winston Salem.  Goffin won easily in 2 sets.

Goffin took a while to find his form this season but he got there. He isn’t quite at the levels he reached last season but he is close.

I think he will be able to level the tie this afternoon.

So it could all come down to Darcis v Delbonis, assuming they don’t change the players.

As I said above Delbonis isn’t great on hard courts and with home advantage I would have to give Darcis the edge. The market agrees with me.

I think I would prefer that if Britain get the the final that they play Belgium. It should be an interesting afternoon!
