Draw for the French Open

So now we know who plays who at Roland Garros. See the draw here

Nadal and Soderling are set to meet in the quarter finals. Or are they?  Players with a chance of upsetting the seeds in this section of the draw include Cuevas, Verdasco, Simon and Baghdatis ( hahaha, sorry, just my little joke! ). Cuevas and Simon are the form players from that group and as Cuevas would meet Nadal in the third round we can possibly expect Simon to be the outside chance here.

Andy Murray must be fairly pleased with his draw. He has Almagro in this section who appears to have found some form if today’s win over Berdych is anything to go by. Melzer is unlikely to threaten as he has potentially difficult matches with Chela, Mayer or Starace. Raonic is in this section and it will be interesting to see how he performs. Dolgopolov is too flaky and inconsistent. Mayer will probably fancy his chances of progressing a round or two although could possibly meet Almagro in the third round. We’re probably looking at Murray and Almagro in the quarters.

Ferrer and Federer are the top seeds in the third section of the draw. Ferrer’s preperation hasn’t been ideal and he will be concerned with his current form. Who do they have as the main threats? Petzschner would be a decent outside bet if it was being played in Germany. His form is great in his own country but he struggles to achieve the same elsewhere. Llodra, Monfils and Tsonga will be lifted by the home crowd but realistically they won’t be there for the quarters. Tipsarevic can trouble anyone on his day. If Ferrer slips up the top half of this section is wide open. Federer lifts his game for the majors and although he has a tougher draw than Ferrer you’d still expect him to come through.

That leaves Djokovic’s section. I’d say this is the section with the most talent. We have Del Potro who no one will want to face. Berdych seemed to be playing well this week but when faced with a top claycourter today he came up well short. Gasquet will feel ready for a decent run although is likely to face either Djokovic or Del Potro in the 4th round. Other form players include Hanescu although he will probably face Djokovic in the second round! Cilic has a chance to get through a couple of rounds with Montanes standing in his way. Youzhny has failed to impress lately and he is unable to string 2 decent performances together.

So much can happen between now and then but my predictions for the quarter finals are:

Nadal v Soderling

Murray v Almagro

Ferrer v Federer         (Ferrer needs to sort his serve out but he has  a very easy route to the quarters. I can’t pick anyone who I rate higher)

Berdych v Djokovic

It never works out as we expect though does it?
