A bit of clay action for us this week and then Davis Cup towards the end of the week.
U Radwanska v Hradecka:
Hradecka starts as favourite at 1.52. She doesn’t perform well as a favourite between 1.50 and 2.00. She did reach the quarter finals of an ITF clay event last week but lost as soon as she came up against a decent player. Her starting price in that match was 1.64 .
Radwanska doesn’t have many recent wins as an underdog but has steadily improved game and her ranking over the last 12 months. She isn’t short of good advice with her sister being near the top of the tour’s rankings.
Radwanska won their only previous matc although that was on grass 3 years ago.
The prices should certainly be a lot closer and Radwanska has the ability to take the match so laying Hradecka seems a sound plan.
Update: I just noticed a typo in my original post with Ursula’s surname showing as Radwankska. That Freudian slip quite aptly describes her performance.
Hradecka won 6-1, 6-4.
Minella v Lucic:
Minella’s ranking is steadily dropping. Most players have been on hard courts for a few weeks and Minella is no exception. She entered an ITF clay court event last week, presumably to get used to the surface again but unfortunately lost in the first round to a player ranked 83 places below her.
Lucic played the same clay tournament and was also dumped out in the first round. She has come through a couple of qualifying rounds in Charleston and while one of her opponents was ranked 1182 in the world it will have given her a chance to get used to the courts and conditions.
Minella has done well in the ITF events on clay in the last 12 months and should have the edge. It depends how long she takes to get used to the courts so may have the slower start.
Update: Minella did have a slow start and went 0-2. She immediately broke back giving us a nice trade but wasn’t quite good enough on the day.
Lucic won 7-5, 7-5.
