Just a quick lazy post on today’s matches while there’s a rain break in the Sri Lanka v Pakistan ODI.
We have Stosur v Erranai and Sharapova v Kvitova.
I don’t expect any shocks when it comes to the results although I expect each favourite to trade higher than their starting prices of 1.43 for Stosur and 1.45 for Sharapova.
Errani has had an amazing week taking out Ivanovic, Kuznetsova and Kerber. She has played aggressively and some of her shot making has been breathtaking. However Stosur has looked impressive also and has yet to drop a set.
The Aussie has a 5-0 head to head record over Errani including in Rome last month in their only previous meeting on clay. Her power will end up being just too much for the little Italian.
In the other semi Sharapova leads the head to heads 3-2 and has won both their 2012 matches. The most recent was in Stuttgart in April which she won in straight sets.
The commentator yesterday was saying that Kvitova still appears to be suffering from her injury which is preventing her reaching high enough on serve which reduces the power. She would need her serve to beat Sharapova although with Sharapova’s shaky ( at times ) serve Kvitova has the ground strokes to hurt the Russian.
As usual if this turns into a long tight match Sharapova has the mental toughness to come through.
I won’t be backing either player from the start and will be waiting for better prices to get on the favourites. An early break against them would be perfect.
Update: Sharapova had a relatively straight forward straight sets win. However the other threw up an unexpected result. Errani kept the first set close and took it with a late break. It seemed an obvious trade to lay her in the second set which proved to be the case as Stosur took the second set 6-1 and everyone expected her to take the third. Errani took a 3-0 lead and was pulled back to 3-3. Errani dealt with the pressure better and took her place in Saturday’s final.
Sharapova won 6-3, 6-3.
Errani won 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.
