French Open 2013 – week 1, Tuesday

Just the 40 matches today. What will you do with all that extra spare time?

Bartoli is one of the 10 am matches. She starts at 1.55 as people start to realise she is in a real slump especially from the service line. Govortsova may not be the best person to take advantage though and we can be certain the French crowd will be doing its best to lift their player.

Their last meeting was 2 years ago at this tournament. Bartoli came through in 3 sets.

I don’t really want to lay at SP as if Bartoli shows even an ounce of improvement on her serve the market will be biased towards her. Ideally she will win an early break to give a lower lay.

Update: Swings galore in this one!

Bartoli eventually won 7-6, 4-6, 7-5.

Hanescu looks a strong candidate to beat Tomic but I see no value at all at his starting price of 1.43 . Hanescu is very solid from the service  line for most of his serve but always manages an awful  game or 2 where you are convinced he’s doing it on purpose. I think we have an excellent chance of getting on above 1.70 .

Dodig has been playing some excellent tennis recently. What has made the difference to his game is that he is playing very aggressively.  He doesn’t have  an easy match today against Pella who made it to the semi finals last week losing in 2 very close sets to Monaco.

I expect this one to be very close and we could see 4 or even 5 sets. If Dodig takes the opening set I will be laying him. The longer the match goes on the more I will favour Pella.

Update: That went well! Dodig took the first set and we laid. Pella took the next 2 sets and went on to take the match in a 12-10 5th set.

Pella won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 12-10.

Two Brits are in action today and both Baltacha and Watson start as under dogs. Baltacha  could take her match with Erakovic to 3 sets as long as her serve is firing. I expect Erakovic to help her out a fair bit and it won’t be a pretty match. Could go either way.

Update: Her serve wasn’t firing. She got battered. Erakovic won 6-3, 6-0.

Heather Watson has intentionally made a slow return after her illness ( glandular fever). She has a winnable match against Voegele but it may be too soon to expect much from her.

Update: Match was rained off. They play Wednesday.
