French Open 2013 – Women’s Final

S Williams v Sharapova:

Williams leads the head to heads 13-2. She has won 30 matches in a row. She has won 22 in a row on clay and has taken 25 matches on the trot when a heavy favourite. Should be a cracking final.

Defending champion Sharapova won her 2 matches in 2004. They have played 6 times in the last 2 seasons. Sharapova won just 1 set in those matches which was in the Miami final in March this year.

Should we just give the trophy to Serena now? Sara Errani had pushed her quite close in their last match but in their semi final she won just 1 game in one of the most one sided semi finals in history.

Sharapova played her opening set against Azarenka at a very high level. If she can produce 2 sets like that in the final then she has an outside chance………of winning a few games.

Serena has had her problems in this tournament with Kuznetsova taking her to 3 sets in the quarter final. Sharapova was taken to 3 sets by Azarenka and by Jankovic who didn’t allow her a single game in their first set.

The only way that Sharapova wins this is if Williams has a total meltdown. It is possible that she tunes out for a set but this is the French Open final. She has “only” won this event once before and won’t pass up the chance to take it for a second time.

Update: Williams won it but it should have been a much shorter match. She had 15 break points but took just 4 of them. Most were wasted by poor errors.

Williams won 6-4, 6-4.
