French Open 2013 – Women’s Semis

First up is the most difficult to predict.

Azarenka leads the head to heads 7-5 but Sharapova won their most recent meeting and has won both their previous matches on clay.

Azarenka is far more comfortable on hard courts and this is the first time she has been beyond the quarter finals at RG.

Sharapova is defending champion. She had looked very solid until her quarter final with Jankovic when she failed to win a game in the opening set.  Azarenka hasn’t been without her own problems and really struggled from the service line against Cornet which resulted in her losing the first set.

Both players will obviously come into this match very focussed and neither will be underestimating the task ahead so I don’t expect a slow start from either. This will be a closely fought contest but Sharapova’s clay game has evolved more than Aza’s. Expect the crowd to get behind Sharapova too. Three sets are likely.

Errani has taken a set from Serena in the past and surprisingly it didn’t happen in either of their matches on clay. Williams leads the head to heads 5-0.

Like everyone else Williams has had her lapses in concentration. In her quarter final having won the first set she went 1-5 down. She pulled a break back but was still taken to a 3rd set.

I think the best we can hope for today is that Errani keeps at least one of the sets close though a set would be brilliant.

No shock result in this one.
