French Open – Friday

As yesterday was severely hit by rain delays there is a packed schedule today and the weekend should be the same. There are games planned to start right up to 7pm UK time so fingers crossed that the rain clouds stay away.

14:00 – Cilic v Mayer

Rankings are 12 and 57. They haven’t played before.

Both men are in good form and have only been beaten recently by top clay court players ( except for Mayer losing to Seppi in Serbia).

Cilic has served reasonably well though nowhere near as well as he can. He seems to be learning a little more patience that is needed on the slower surface.

Mayer is playing above his ranking on clay this season. He pushed Verdasco very close in the semi final in Nice having beaten Baghdatis and Bellucci enroute to that semi.

Cilic wins 85% of his service games to Mayer’s 80% so this should be a good match for backing both players on serve. You might want to wait until they have both had one service game before getting involved.

This match could be very close and I would be very surprised if we don’t see at least one tie break.

Update: It WAS very close! ( And we DID see a tie break)

Cilic won 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.

19:00 – Youzhny v Troicki

Rankings are 14 and 41. Head to heads are 1-1. Their only meeting on clay was 12 months ago and went to Youzhny in 3 sets.

Youzhny won the BMW Open earlier this month and is in great form. He has seemed a little more relaxed over the last 6 months and it has shown in his results. It hasn’t diminished his fighting spirit at all and he is one of the most competitive guys on the tour.

Troicki has yet to lose a set this week although hasn’t had too much sucess earlier in the  season.

Youzhny has one of the most consistent first serves with a 65% success rate. He wins 80% of his service games. Troicki’s serve is ok but his first serve isn’t as big as Youzhny’s.

Back Youzhny on serve.

Update: This match was carried over into Saturday. Youzhny won 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3.
