I will ignore the Davis Cup matches for the blog post. I may look at the next lot of singles matches on Sunday.
Vesnina plays Kirilenko in Pattaya. Some of the players have struggled with playing more than 1 match in a day to make up the time lost through rain delays.
Vesnina has been affected by that which won’t help her cause today.
Kirilenko leads the head to heads 3-0. The first 2 were 3 setters but the most recent which was in Moscow last year was won in straight sets. She somehow managed to lose the opening set of her last match which is the only set she has lost this week. She controlled the match after that.
Vesnina has had chances to finish both her matches in straight sets but has thrown away the second sets each time.
Kirilenko starts at 1.59 which isn’t a terrible price but for trading purposes I will be waiting for nearer evens before backing Kirilenko. I think Vesnina’s mind could easily go AWOL again but Kirilenko won’t let her back into the match like her previous opponents did. Kirilenko to win in 2 tight sets or maybe 3.
In Paris Barthel and Bartoli should have a great match. The French favourite started well against McHale in the last round but it didn’t last long and she was broken first in the fifth game. She left the break back very late and broke as McHale was servig for the set. That obviously bothered McHale as she was also broken in her next service game to take the set. The second set was a quick one as McHale crumbled to 1-6.
Barthel had a real battle with Vinci in her last match and lost the opening set. Her best surface is probably indoor hard courts as there is no wind to affect her serve and timing.
Barthel won their only previous meeting which was last year although it was on clay.
This should be a very tight match and I expect to see 3 sets. Both are capable of slow starts. The prices are very even with Bartoli a slight favourite at 1.85. I am slightly favouring Bartoli but I think she will have to come back from a set down. I will wait for her price to drop below 1.50 to lay her in the first set.
