Kerber v Kvitova:
Last night Kerber played some of the best tennis we have seen this week. She totally over powered former world number 1 Wozniacki. She obviously has the home support which she seemed to thrive on to make Woz look very ordinary. She was playing the type of shots that only come off in practise.
Kvitova’s first game on the clay started slowly against Schiavone. In the first couple of games she struggled to find her timing and most shots were going long. That was soon corrected though and once she got her ground strokes going the result was never really in doubt.
Kvitova starts as favourite on Betfair at 1.76 and it will be interesting to see if Kerber is able to play at anything like the standard we saw yesterday. I don’t expect any “let down” from Kerber after her Wozniacki win as she is getting used to beating top players. Also she has won the last 2 matches against Woz.
Today there are two big hitters and this should be a great match. Kerber won’t find this an easy one and whereas Wozniacki didn’t have anything to knock her off her stride that isn’t the case with Kvitova.
I have to give the edge to Kvitova but I can see Kerber having the better start with the loud crowd behind her. For that reason I will wait to get on Kvitova over evens.
Either 2 tight sets or perhaps a 3 setter with Kvitova going through.
Update: Kerber was broken in the 3rd game but broke back in the 4th. Kvitova broke again in the 7th, was broken herself in the 8th and broke kerber again in the 9th!
The second set was tighter with just one break to Kvitova.
Kvitova won 6-4, 6-4.
