Friday 5th April 2013

Rain wiped out most of the play in Charleston. Die hard traders were rewarded just before midnight with some matches to trade.

Goerges continued her habit of being unable to play well for 2 straight sets. She was playing really well in the first set and was dominating Voegele. Serving at 5-1 she suddenly forgot how to serve. She just about held it together to close out the set 6-3 but her poor serving continued into set 2. She ended up losing in 3 sets. Great for trading but screwed up my only betting tip of the day.

Jankovic won her opening set 6-0 but then seemed to switch off. She went a break down in the second set but scraped through 6-4.

Maybe so many tennis players are mentally fragile because they start playing so early in life which distracts them from their education.

Yesterday’s blog picks are still on for today. I also feel Lepchenko has a decent chance against Venus Williams. 1.67 isn’t a great price to be laying though and I will wait for under 1.30 on Venus.

Davis Cup matches are also on today. Simon seemed a reasonable price at 1.65 against Monaco. Its on the Argentine’s best surface but Simon is not a bad clay court player.  They have played 4 times on the dirt and shared the matches 2-2 although Simon won the 2 most recent. Their last clay court match was in 2007 though.

Kerber and Morita could be a swingy match. Kerber starts as favourite at 1.60 but  I can see this going to 3 sets.  An in form Kerber should take a tight match but its hard to know which version of her will be on court tonight.

  1. Hi Paul,

Venus Williams’ back injury that forced her out of Miami was joint inflammation. Still not 100%, but feels ok. She can’t serve at 100% apparently.

If this was “proper” clay I’d be laying Venus low too as Lepchenko can play decent on the red stuff, but I somehow get the feeling Venus may just sneak through here.

    1. HI Steve,

Yes I think she is just too strong today. Playing the big points much better. I agree with the comms that 6-2 doesn’t reflect the set but I don’t see a comeback here.

  2. Haven’t watched any of the Venus match Paul.

Am watching the BMS v Keys “fiasco”. Thought Keys may be value at around 2.30 as BMS doesn’t like big hitters but Keys is just so nervous. She blew a 5-1 lead. Somehow managed 1st set.

Think I’m lucky to be able to get out while still green – looks like a mug-fest in the making.
