Simon v Isner:
They have played twice before and Isner has won them both. Both matches were on hard courts.
Isner is obviously seen as a player more suited to the hard courts but he plays the big matches well on clay too. In the recent Davis Cup match against Federer he won in 4 sets. His only clay court match before that was in 2011’s French Open where he took Nadal to 5 sets.
Simon took the strange decision to play the South American clay court section of the tour. It didn’t go well losing to Berlocq twice in straight sets. he has won just 1 of his last 5 on clay. prior to that he won in Hamburg (2011). He also doesn’t play a lot of clay events.
On paper Simon has the better game for this surface but has been playing with neck and back problems.
Isner is full of confidence having made it into the top 10 and even though he is the underdog I feel he is definitely the value pick here.
Update: Isner won in 3 straight sets.
6-3, 6-2, 7-5.
