Granollers v Monfils:
Granollers seemed to be down and out against Cilic As the Croat seemed to be in total control. Granollers found a way back and took a tight third set.
Monfils has been in a rush all week. Apart from his second set against Andujar which needed a tie break he has got the job done quickly. That isn’t a good sign for Granollers today.
Monfils leads the head to heads 1-0 which was in 2009.
The 3 set come back against Cilic will have taken a lot out of the Spaniard whereas Monfil has been very efficient this week with his victories.
This looks like it will be a tight match but the longer it goes on the more it favours Monfils. He can’t afford any slack games though or Granollers is quite capable of taking advantage.
Has to be a Monfils win for me.
Nishikori v Kukushkin:
Kukushkin served extremely well in his straight sets win over Blake. The American hasn’t been in the best form outside America but this was still an excellent win for the Russian.
Nishikori had to fight hard to get past Seppi. He was broken in the very first game but broke back immediately. He came close to losing the second set in the tie break but held himself together well.
Their only previous match was in a qualifying round in August which nishikori won in straight sets.
Nishikori is prone to the occasional bad couple of games in matches that he should win comfortably. if he makes that mistake day he could find it tough to break back. Nishikori is a much better returner than James Blake but i think he needs to make sure of his own service games and take the rare chances that he will get against the Kukushkin serve.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the price go higher in the first set so I won’t be getting involved until it does.
Nishikori should have enough to get the job done.
