Petzschner takes on Starace in Munich. The German has had a great tournament so far knocking out Dodig and defending champion Youzhny. He has played some inspired tennis at times and his serve improved against Youzhny. Starace is the claycourt specialist but these courts seem to playing very fast. This suits Petzschner’s bigger serve and he also has home advantage which is working well for the Germans this week. If Petzschner can play at the level of his last match he will come through in 2 tight sets or perhaps a 3 setter though I am leaning more towards a straight sets win.
Update: Not a great match but definately 2 tight sets! Petzschner won 7-6, 7-6.
Lopez plays Montanes. Lopez has probably been the more impressive this week beating Monaco and Gonzalez although i expected him to beat gonzo much easier than he did. Montanes often looks disinterested in his matches as he did against Berrer. Lopez leads their clay head to heads at 2-1 but their last match was in 2008. Montanes is the better claycourter at the moment but there isn’t much in it. While Lopez is serving consistently he can take anyone close but isn’t the best returner of serve. I was disappointd with him against Gonzalez and for that reason give the edge to Montanes.
Update: Montanes struggled to get hold of Lopez’ serve consistently. Lopez won 6-4, 6-4.
Cuevas should be able to deal with Bellucci easily enough. He played superbly in the first set against Tsonga although to be fair the Frenchman was terrible. Cuevas came back well in the second when Tsonga served for the set. I haven’t been over impressed with Bellucci lately although he has a slightly better record on clay. Cuevas has never reached the semi finals here and must think he has a great chance. probably a typical claycourt encounter but I expect Cuevas to come through.
Update: After a shaky start Cuevas won 6-4, 6-2.
Kohlschreiber wasn’t overly impressive in the last round but Stepanek needed 3 sets to get past Dustin Brown. I have to favour the German on home soil.
Update: Really poor day at the office for Kohlschreiber. Stepanek won 6-4,6-0.
Then we have the day’s big event ( no not the wedding). Soderling takes on Del Potro. DP leads the head to head 4-1 although they have never played on clay. I suspect the prices are so much in favour of Del Potro due to Soderling’s up and down performances lately but I expected a slightly higher SP for the Argentinian than 1.63 . He ( DP ) needed 3 sets to get past Sousa in the first round.
Gut feeling tells me Del Potro will take it but I want to see a few games before getting involved.
Update: Both had chances and Soderling looked the better player in the early games but Del Potro won 6-4, 7-5.
More to come……..Update: …or maybe not…
