Friday’s matches

Fish and Wawrinka are first up in the Mens event. Both had tough 3 setters yesterday. Wawrinka has had more time to recover as Fish was on court quite late. They have only played once before and that was back in 2007. Fish won in straight sets.

Mardy Fish had to work very hard to beat Gulbis. His serve wasn’t that good and there were many long rallies. In the end he was just a little more consistent at key moments.

Wawrinka started the tournament playing exceptionally well but his level dropped against Anderson. Anderson created but wasted chances that a better player would have put away.

If Wawrinka can regain the level he had against Nalbandian then this will be close but his play seems to be going the opposite way. For that reason I will go with Fish to get the win but don’t expect it to be pretty. This will be winning ugly at its best.

Update: Fish won 6-3, 6-7, 6-0

Berdych and Tipsarevic: Both men are playing bery well this week. Berdych dealt quite easily with Karlovic’s serve although needed a tie break in the second set. He also beat in  form Dolgopolov in the previous match.

Tipsarevic has lost just 1 set which was a tie break against Verdasco. He has served reasonably well and is hitting the ball cleanly. He will need his serve to be at its very best to keep himself in this match.

Tipsarevic won their last match which was in 2010 and also on a hard court. The Davis Cup tie ended 3-1 in the Serb’s favour.

Berdych starts at 1.70 on Betfair. If Tipsarevic can serve consistently then he has a slight edge for me. he has played the more aggressive tennis with Berdych trying to play safe too often. I will start with a small lay of Berdych until I can see how Tipsarevic is holding. This is very likely to be 3 sets.

Update: Tipsarevic won 6-4, 6-4.

Petkovic has never beaten Radwanska in 3 attempts. She had an easy win over Wimbledon champ Kvitova in the last round although Kvitova didn’t put up much of a fight. Radwanska knocked out Zvonareva in straight sets and has yet to lose a set.

These two played each other a week ago and the match was won by Radwanska in 3 sets with Petkovic winning the opening set.

Normally I would expect this one to also go Radwanska’s way and she starts at 1.9 on Betfair. However  Radwanska won the tournament last week so is statistically unlikely to win this event. Whether she goes out in this round is anyone’s guess but I will be laying her until she loses this week.

Update: Rad wasn’t ready to go home yet. Petkovic led in the first set but Radwanska won 6-4, 6-3.
