11:30 – Mayer v Dolgopolov
Rankings are 54 and 39. They haven’t played before.
Mayer is probably the better claycourt player of the two and reached the quarter finals of the Mercedes Cup last week losing to Monfils in 3 sets.
Dolgopolov hasn’t played since Wimbledon where he sustained a hip injury. He withdrew from Stutgart last week so perhaps the injury is still troubling him.
Mayer has a consistent first serve at 63% and he wins 70% of his points on serve.
Dolgopolov has a slightly lower first serve percentage but the rest of the stats are very similar.
Mayer is in front of a home crowd against a possibly injured opponent so has to be a strong favourite here.
Back Mayer on serve. He starts at 1.66 on Betfair.
Update: Mayer won 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
15:30 – Simon v Nieminen
Rankings are 33 and 60. Head to heads are 1-1.
Neither player has set the tennis world alight this season. Simon is playing slightly better tennis but has a long way to go before he is back to his best. Nieminen has a very consistent first serve at 70% but it often lacks bite and if Simon is in the right frame of mind he will be able to attack it.
Simon needs to be aggressive from the start and if he does this he is a strong favourite for me. Betfair has them pretty much level.
Watch the opening couple of games. I expect Simon to get the upper hand early and for Nieminen to be quite passive. If this is the case then back Simon on serve.
Update: Nieminen won 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
