14:00 – Wawrinka v Starace
Rankings are 23 and 73. Head to heads are 1-1 with Wawrinka winning their last match.
Wawrinka starts as strong favourite and if he plays to his usual standard he should come through in straight sets. Occasionally though he can throw in too many unforced errors so it depends which Wawrinka turns up.
Starace has played some great tennis this week but also had a major wobble in his second round match where he lost the second set 6-0.
Both players are comfortable on clay but I give the edge to Wawrinka.
I feel its risky to back him from the start and will be using scalping. Be careful if there is a 15-40 opportunity in Starace’s favour as Wawrinka tends to save his best serves for when he is break point down.
Update: Wawrinka won 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
16:00 – Hanescu v Serra
Rankings are 43 and 57. Head to heads are 2-0 to Serra.
Both players were impressive in their last matches and we can look to back both of them on serve.
Hanescu came through against an in-form Gasquet and once his serve got going he was tough to break down.
Serra came through a match in which I had him as under dog but Garcia-Lopez was well below his best. Serra took full advantage though and played excellent tennis.
Tough to pick a winner but if Hanescu can get his serve right straight from the start I feel he is favourite. It really can go either way.
Use scalping but be wary of 15-40 as both men can find a big serve when the pressure is on.
Update: Hanescu won 6-4, 6-1.
