The slightly extended grass season kicks off today. The players have an extra week to get ready for Wimbledon.
ATP Mercedes Open, 13:30 – Dolgopolov v Kohlschreiber
Their head to heads are 1-1. Both matches were in 2011. Kohlschreiber won on grass in 2 sets. Oddly both their matches ended 6-3, 7-6!
Dolgopolov reached the third round at Wimbledon in the last two seasons. He also made the quarter finals at Queens Club last year.
Kohlschreiber performs very well on grass in Germany. He alternates 1 good run at Wimbledon with an early exit. He lost in the second round last year so is due a good tournament this time!
The sets should be close and both players’ serves can be very effective on grass but I have to favour Kohlschreiber on home soil.
Wait for a little better price on him though. He starts around 1.54
WTA Nottingham, 15:30 – Jovanovski v Gibbs
Jovanovski found some clay form from nowhere recently which will help her confidence. She reached the third round at Wimbledon last year but generally doesn’t have a great record on grass.
Gibbs has won just 1 of her last 10. She has limited experience on grass but reached the semis in the Nottingham ITF tournament last season. She lost in the qualifying rounds at Wimbledon.
This is a tough one to call as it’s their first match on grass for a while. I think laying Jovanovski is a decent place to start as she often starts slowly anyway. Gibbs’ form isn’t encouraging but a change of surface may help her.
Jovanovski will come through a tight match unless she has a nightmare on serve.
