January 30th 2013

We saw some strange scores and results yesterday. If you had laid every favourite you would have had a chance to green out for decent profit in the majority of games.

Top seed Ivanovic made an awful start against Morita and was a set and a break down before she clawed herself back to 1 set all. That match will resume today after the rain delay. Arvidsson has beaten Cornet fairly comfortably in their previous matches so for her to go 0-5 in the first set was unexpected ( and costly). She lost the third set 6-0!

Goerges lost to Mladenovic. This was very profitable as I was tuned in to the spirit of the day by that time!

Lets see what today brings.

Perhaps one of the best match ups of the day looks like Wickmayer v Pavlyuchenkova. They have already played this year and it was a tight one  that Pav took in 3 sets. Both can serve well and Pav in particular has done a lot of work on her serve in the off season.

Wickmayer starts as slight favourite but I am favouring Pav. They have both reached a final already this season but I get the feeling she is going to have an excellent year if she can keep her serve at the level we have seen so far in 2013.

I will be waiting for a lower price to lay Wickmayer.

Update:Very tight first 2 sets but Wickmayer ran away with the third.

Wickmayer won 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

McHale appears to have put her illness problems behind her as she recorded her first win over Parmentier in the first round. McHale at her best is a big server and whilst her serving wasn’t brilliant she hadn’t won a match for so long that it will have given her confidence a real boost. Bartoli reached the semi finals in Paris last season and is on home soil. She has looked vulnerable in the matches I have seen in 2013 and if McHale can step the serve up a notch or 2 I think she could certainly at least push Bartoli’s price well above the SP of 1.34 .

Update: Bartoli started the first game as if she really meant business. However it was McHale who broke first and served for the set. She was broken and theb broken again. She fell apart in the second set.

Bartoli won 7-5, 6-1.

I also feel that Safarova’s price of 1.19 is too low against Dominguez Lino who can be a tricky opponent and fights from the first point to the last.

Update: Dominguez took the opening set  but Safarova won in 3.

Safarova won 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
