Japan Open – Friday

 06:00 – Monfils v Roddick

Rankings are 15 and 10. Head to heads are 4-4.

Two players with immense talent who haven’t quite made that talent pay on a regular basis.

Roddick played a very solid match against Chardy. He did just enough to get the break in each set.

Monfils has been showing a better attitude to his tennis recently but I still have a problem putting any money on him.

Both players have big serves that can be very difficult to break. However Roddick tends to be more consistent with his. They hold serve 81% and 91%.

Monfils has slightly better stats on return of serve. Roddick tends to rely heavily on his serve and will often get just 1 break per set.

As Roddick is the more consistent player and seems to be hitting the ball well at the moment I have to favour him to take the match. However, as is often the case, the outcome can depend on which Monfils turns up on the day. If he is focused and isn’t playing the clown then he can take Roddick close. Three of Monfils’ four wins against Roddick were on clay though.

Both should be ok to back on serve although I would wait until Monfils had had ay least 1 service game before backing him.

Update: Monfils won 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
