19:00 – Federer v Gulbis
Rankings are 1 and 34. Head to heads are 1-1.
Gulbis beat Federer in Rome after Fed had won the first set. However having watched Federer destroy Wawrinka last night I don’t see Gulbis making it back to back wins against the number 1.
Federer was quite simply in a class of his own. Not many can make Wawrinka look so ordinary on clay.
Gulbis is in good form too but I think when he beat Federer in April most people, including Fed, were surprised by the improvement in Gulbis. He has a new coaching team and is taking his tennis more seriously. He now realises that he has to put some hard work in to his preparation and it is certainly paying off. This time Federer will be ready for him and will have worked out the best way to deal with the threat.
Back Fed on serve or from the start. He will be out to prove a point tonight. Should be good to watch 😉
Update: Federer made a slow start and lost his first service game. He was always chasing the first set after that and Gulbis served well.
After that it was pretty much all Federer. His serve improved and he took the second set easily. The decider was a little closer but Federer always looked in control.
Fed won 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
21:00 – Murray v Ferrer
Rankings are 4 and 12. Head to heads are 2-1 to Ferrer ( 2-0 on clay).
Murray seems to have found some form at last and made short work of Hanescu last night.
Ferrer is on home soil and has never lost to Murray on clay. He beat Cilic easily yesterday. The atmosphere will be fantastic tonight and there won’t be many cheering for the Scot.
Ferrer starts as favourite. Back him on serve.
Update: A good match with some entertaining tennis.
Ferrer won 7-5, 6-3.
