Madrid Open – Monday

13:00 – Anderson v Melzer

Rankings are 88 and 30. They haven’t played before.

Anderson is another who has switched between the ATP clay and Challenger hard courts. He did win a Challenger event recently but this won’t help him to adjust to the slow surface and will give a further advantage to Melzer.

Melzer starts as a fairly strong favourite and is at 1.51 on Betfair. Always consistent, his  game is more suited to clay than Anderson’s.

I feel Anderson will make a slow start so you could back Melzer from the start and green up at the end of the set.

Alternatively back Melzer on serve.

Update : Anderson did make a slow start and Melzer took the first set easily. A different story in the second set with Anderson taking it.

A tight 3rd set saw Melzer progress to the next round.

Melzer won 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

17:00 – Kohlschreiber v Giraldo

Rankings are 28 and 61. They haven’t played before.

Kohlschreiber has had a good clay court season so far and has only been beaten by top players, namely Nadal, Ferrer, Tsonga and Baghdatis. His game is well suited to clay.

Giraldo has also been enjoying the slower surface. He has won a Challenger event on clay and also reached a semi final. Only Tsonga and an in form Gil have beaten him in ATP clay events this year.

This should be a tight match which would be ideal for Back the Server. Back Kohlschreiber on his serve.

Kohlschreiber’s experience should bring him through.

Update : Kohlschreiber seemed to be running away with it and lost just 1 game in the opening set.

Giraldo  then stepped up several gears to take the next 2 sets surprisingly easily.

Giraldo won 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.
