11:00 – Williams v Peer
Rankings are 3 and 22. Head to heads are 4-0 to Williams.
Williams seems to be in good form on the run up to The French and she’ll want to win this tournament to let the rest know she’s ready for the Major.
She has lost just one set this week in a slow start against Schiavone.
Peer is also playing well and has had one other semi final recently where she lost to Henin. She’s hitting the ball well but I’m not sure she is in a position to record her first win over Venus.
If Venus serves well she will win easily.
Back Willimas from the start or on serve.
Update : This was the Williams show. She broke early but was broken back for 3-3 but exactly the same as the first set yesterday she then won the next 3 games. The second set was one way traffic.
Williams win 6-3, 6-0.
13:00 – Almagro v Nadal
Rankings are 35 and 3. Head to heads are 5-0 to Nadal.
Nadal has won in Rome and Monte Carlo and he’ll be keen to show he is capable of taking back his French Open crown.
He has lost just one set in the last 3 tournaments.
Almagro has had a great week but there is no home advantage here. The crowd will want a Spanish winner for their tournament and Nadal is the best chance of that.
Almagro may take Nadal close in 1 set but I can’t see him taking a set today.
No trade for me but should be a good one to watch.
There will be traders laying Nadal simply because he is so low priced. I dont feel the return will be worth it.
Update: I got that wrong! Nadal’s turn to make a slow start and Almagro was playing some inspired tennis. Nadal’s first serve was terrible and he didn’t win a point on his second serve until ( I think) almost the end of the set.
In the second set Nadal’s serve was better and he raised his game. Almagro battled hard but couldn’t stay with him.
The third set was one way traffic.
Nadal won 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
15:00 – Safarova v Rezai
Rankings are 30 and 24. Head to heads are 1-1.
Rezai must start as favourite on current form. She has beaten Jankovic and Henin this week and will be full of confidence.
Safarova has had to fight in every round so far and has been taken to three sets in each match except the first round.
A very even contest but I have to give the edge to Rezai. I think we’ll see a few price swings.
Scalping and/or 15-40.
Update: Safarova wasn’t 100% fit and retired injured after the first set. Rezai deserved to go through though as she was playing some great tennis.
Rezai won 6-1 (Safarova retired)
19:00 – Federer v Ferrer
Rankings are 1 and 12. Head to heads are 9-0 to Fed though they haven’t played on clay for 5 years.
Federer made a slow start against Gulbis with one bad service game. But he came back very strong in the next 2 sets to show some of the form that he will need today.
Ferrer will have the crowd behind him. The Spaniard played well to beat an improved Murray in the quarter final and will fancy his chances of beating Federer for the first time.
I would watch the opening couple of games just incase Federer loses his first service game as he has done in the last 2 matches.
I think Ferrer will put up a great fight but Fed looks up for this tournament and I’d expect him to win.
Back Federer on serve ( but not the first game!).
Update: Ferrer did put up a fight and took the match the distance. Federer looked in control in the first set but the breaks were hard to come by. He finally took the set 7-5.
In the second set the crowd really got behind Ferrer and he upped his game. At the same time Fed’s serve deserted him and his overall level of play dropped. This allowed Ferrer to level the match.
Normal service was resumed in the final set and Federer booked his place in the final.
Fed won 7-3, 3-6, 6-3.
