17:00 – Arvidsson v Paszek
Rankings are 48 and 151. They have never played before.
Paszek has come through both her matches fairly easily and without dropping a set. Arvidsson was 5-2 up in the first set of her last match with Lucic but managed to lose the set 5-7.
The quality of the tennis this week has been poor. Matches are being lost rather than won and I don’t expect this match to be any different.
On paper they both serve reasonably well holding serve 69% and 64% but they both rely on their first serve working as their second serves are dismal.
Paszek’s return of serve is even worse than her serve and Arvidsson beats her is every category including points won against serve, break points converted and number of break points created on average per game.
Hopefully Arvidsson won’t throw a set away like she did in the last match and I expect her to win.
Scalping, especially on second serves and 15-40 will work fine. Laying the server in the opening couple of games may give some profit as their poor serves will be even worse before they are fully warmed up.
Update: Paszek won 6-3, 6-4.
20:30 – Glatch v McHale
Rankings are 373 and 128. They haven’t played before.
Glatch is slight favourite on betfair but I have McHale as fave. She is more consistent and stronger on serve.
Glatch wins 68% of points when her first serve is successful. Unfortunately her first serve is only successful 54% of the time. She wins just 41% of points on her second serve.
McHale’s stats on return of serve are much better than Glatch’s and I expect her to try to punish any weak second serves.
As before, scalping and 15-40 will work fine. Try to lay the server on second serve.
Update: McHale won 6-3, 6-1.
