Saturday 08:30 – Simon v Troicki
Rankings are 41 and 30. Head to heads are 4-0 to Simon.
Simon went an early break down against Gulbis but stayed calm and pulled it back. When Gulbis was allowing a couple of line calls to affect him Simon remained professional and was able to take advantage. Gulbis tanked the second set showing he has a lot of growing up to do.
Troicki played a pretty solid match against Mayer although he needed a tie break to close the match out in the second set. Straight set wins over Gasquet and Chela were impressive.
In their comments to the press Simon seems the more determined saying all he is concentrating on at the moment is winning this tournament. That could have something to do with the fact he may face Federer early at the Oz Open.
Troicki said it wouldn’t be a disaster if he didn’t win the final. Perhaps he feels he has more chance of a decent run in Melbourne.
This will be a close match and there’s a high possibility of it going to 3 sets. They have held serve 91% and 86% so backing on serve in the first set is an option. I think Simon wants it more so backing him from the start with half stakes could work well. I wouldn’t commit full stake to an early back as both are capable of an early slip up.
Update: Troicki broke in the first game of each set and Simon came back. Troicki was fighting with his emotions for most of the match and throwing away a 3-0 lead in the second set almost crushed his spirit. He broke again to lead 6-5 but Simon once again broke him. Simon took the tie break and with it the title.
Simon won 7-5, 7-6.
If it does go to 3 sets my money is on Simon.
