11:00 – Montanes v Melzer
Rankings are 30 and 15. Head to heads are 3-1 to Melzer ( 2-1 on clay).
Montanes had had 2 three setters in the last 2 rounds. His recent results before this week have been poor. He has lost 4 of his last 5 matches when priced as the underdog.
Melzer had a tough first match against Zverev which he came through 7-5, 7-5.
Their serve stats are pretty similar over the last 12 months.
Melzer has been in great form over recent months and whilst he is happy enough on clay anyway the slightly faster clay courts here will suit him even more.
Montanes hasn’t served that well this week but has returned quite well which has pulled him through. Melzer’s serve is in a different class to his previous 2 opponents though.
Either back Melzer on serve or back him from the start to green up after the first set.
Update: Melzer lost serve early but levelled the scores shortly after. He then fell apart and won just 1 of the next 9 games. very un-melzer-like.
Montanes won 6-4, 6-1.
16:00 – Monfils v Mayer
Rankings are 17 and 56. Head to heads are 1-0 to Monfils but that was 5 years ago.
Monfils had a tough 3 setter against Andujar who he really should be beating in straight sets. His recent results haven’t been great.
Mayer has been impressive this week with straight sets victories over Garcia-Lopez and Kohlschreiber.
Serve stats are not too different with Mayer having a slightly higher first serve percentage at 64%. He wins more points on second serve than Monfils.
If Monfils can keep his serve consistent and cut out the basic unforced errors then this could go his way. However Mayer is infront of his home crowd and as he has knocked out their previous favourite, Kohlschreiber, the crowd will be right behind him.
Both should be ok to back on serve although as usual wait until they have each had a service game.
Should be close but I give Mayer the edge.
Update: Mayer took the first set but Monfils started to play much better in the second to level the match. In the third set Monfils was able to hold it together and managed to break serve early. However in the very next game Mayer broke back. Leading 5-4 Monfils broke serve again to take the match.
Monfils won 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
