Monaco v Lu:
They have never played before. I think this one could be close. On paper Monaco looks the stronger player , however he has played most of his tennis this season on clay courts.
Lu only seemed to be able to play his best tennis on grass but he’s not having a bad season so far on the hard courts. He won a Challenger in Singapore this month and also a semi final in February.
Monaco hasn’t played much on hard courts this season. In fact there have been just 3 matches. His 2 losses were a 5 setter against Kohlschreiber and a 7-5 7-5 loss to John Isner in Indian Wells. neither one could be called a bad loss.
I think on this one I’ll place a part stake on Monaco and will add the rest if he is broken early. Class should prove to be the edge and I expect Monaco to come through in 2 tight sets.
Update: Lu retired at 0-5 in the first set. Bets void.
Muller v Roddick:
Roddick leads their head to heads 2-1. They haven’t played since 2008.
Muller also has a big serve and when that serve is working at its best he can be very difficult to break. However he plays his best tennis on indoor hard courts and his serve seems to be adversely affected by the conditions on an outdoor court.
Roddick has been in a slump for a while but seems to be finding some form in his own country. Wins over Petzschner and Istomin and a close loss to Anderson in Delray Beach were followed by a victory in Indian Wells over Kubot who seems to love playing the big servers and who had won their previous match. Roddick then took Berdych to 3 sets in round 2.
If this was indoor it would be difficult to pick a winner but as its in America on outdoor hard courts I expect Roddick to come through. High probability of us seeing at least 1 tie break.
Update: Roddick won 6-3, 6-2.
