Dodig plays in his home tournament against Albert Ramos. Dodig doesn’t have a good record on clay and lost in the first round in Germany last week.
Ramos reached the Final of the claycourt Challenger event in Turina couple of weeks ago. He also reached another quarter final the week before and won the event the week before that, all on clay.
I don’t think home advantage will help Dodig in this one unless he finds some claycourt form from nowhere.
Update: Ramos won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Brit girl Elena Baltacha is up against Shvedova in Washington. The head to heads are 2-2 with Baltacha leading 2-1 on faster courts. However they haven’t played for 2 years.
Baltacha didn’t play well in her first round loss last week to Koryttseva and has been complaining about how hot the weather is in Washington. She may get lucky today as her opponent is in terrible form having lost 7 of her last 8 matches and 6 of her last 7 on hard courts. Shvedova also doesn’t cope well with a decent server so Baltacha’s serve could be the difference today. If she doesn’t serve well at the start it could be worth laying her.
Update: Baltacha won 6-2, 7-6.
Heather Watson is also in Washington and start at 2.10 against Daniilidou. Watson was hampered by an injury in her loss at Wimbledon when she had looked the better player in the first set.
Daniilidou hasn’t had a great few weeks on the clay and grass courts but has a decent record on hard courts. She played an ITF event in Spain a month agoas top seed and won the tournament although had poor opposition.
I think Watson has a great chance today as she has the stronger serve. They look fairly even on return of serve but I am going for Watson in 2 tight sets.
Update: Watson won 6-4, 6-1.
