Monday’s matches

This is a week to be careful. Any of the players who feel they can progress a couple of rounds or more at the US Open and feel a slight injury may well be less inclined to risk it this week. I’m predicting a few retirements across the 3 tournaments.

Not a very inspiring list of games today. I may add matches later but I am really struggling to find matches that are worth posting.

Andreev v Melzer: Melzer leads the head  to heads 4-1 although they haven’t played since 2008. Melzer actually played very well against Simon last week and lost in 3 sets. He is one player who even though he has had recent injury problems he will want some court time before next week.

At 1.50 he is worth a back from the start. That should blow away a few cobwebs after the weekend! A concern is that Andreev beat Tomic yesterday in 3 sets but Melzer needs this win more than his opponent.

Update: Oh dear Mr Melzer. Time to consider a move to the Challenger tour.

Andreev won 7-5, 6-3.

Baltacha v Zahlavova Strycova: BZS starts this match as favourite at 1.93 . I would have Baltacha as slight favourite as her serve is better and as long as she plays aggressively she should come through. I expect to see a lot of price swings in this one and I don’t think it will be  a match to let a trade run for very long.

Baltacha has had more games on hard courts recently and has put in some decent performances.  BZS’s serve has been even more feeble than normal with her service games held dropping to just 33% in the last month compared to 70% from the Brit.

Update:  Baltacha won 6-2, 6-1.
