17:00 – Andujar v Starace
Rankings are 71 and 49. Head to heads are 4-0 to Starace with all of them being on clay.
Starace much prefers clay to any other surface. He can be a little flaky at times but if he is on his game he will win this in straight sets.
Andujar’s serve seems to be more effective on clay as he holds around 80% of service games on this surface but held just 61% of games on all surfaces last year.
A downside here is that Starace doesn’t like condidtions in South America and has lost 5 of his last 6 over there.
Andujar on the other hand has won 5 of his last 6 matches in South America.
I’d advise waiting to see how they start. If Starace’s serve seems solid and he is threatening to break then I will be backing him.
Alternatively, judging by the trends I mentioned above it could work well to lay Starace from the start as he is unlikely to be comfortable in the opening couple of games. I wouldn’t advise leaving the trade open too long.
I’d be very surprised if Starace loses this one though.
Update: Starace won 6-4, 6-1.
