Oz Open – Week 1, Friday night

Midnight – Youzhny v Raonic

Rankings are 10 and 152.  They haven’t played before.

Youzhny often starts slowly and we could see that today. He is up against a Canadian with a massive serve who held serve 88% of the time last season.

Raonic beat Llodra in straight sets in the last round and Youzhny could take the first set to get to grips with the big serve.

Over 5 sets you have to favour the top 10 player but I don’t think it will be won in 3 sets.

Youzhny served well in the last match but had 4 double faults and 47 unforced errors. Raonic served just 1 double fault and 20 unforced errors. Youzhny is more likely to be broken in the first set so I recommend laying him from the start.

I think Youzhny will use his experience to find a way to break the serve in the second set so backing him after he loses the first set is the way to go.

Alternatively, lay Youzhny on Raonic’s serve.

Update: The match started pretty much as predicted with Raonic breaking serve late in the set. He won the first set. Youzhny then broke in the very first  game of the second and i think most people in the chatroom had a decent green.

Raonic kept playing great tennis and won 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

05:00  – Isner v Cilic

Rankings are 20 and 15.  They haven’t played before.

Two players with massive serves so this could come down to who deals with tie breaks better. Isner has one of the best tb records on the tour and holds his game together a little better than Cilic when the pressure is on.

Cilic reached the semi finals last year so he is defending ranking points. That can be a big motivation to someone with an eye on the top 10.

Isner started the week poorly but we saw a big improvement from him against Stepanek.

Its quite likely we will see a tie break in the first set so backing both on serve sounds like a good plan.

I expect Isner to come through on top.

Update: A mini-marathon dominated by serve. Cilic won in 5 sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6, 9-7.
