Oz Open – Women’s Final

08:30 -Li v Clijsters

Rankings are 11 and 3. Head to heads are 4-2 to Clijsters.

They have played once in 2011 which was in the final of the Medibank International. Clijsters seemed to have the first set wrapped up but allowed Li to come back to take it in a tie break. Li took the second set fairly comfortably.

Li hasn’t lost a match in 2011 but came close in the semi final against Wozniacki. She was poor for most of the first 2 sets and faced a match point. The comeback queen found some form from somewhere and never gave up. In her other Oz Open matches she has looked impressive.

Clisters has lost just one match in 2011 which was the final against Li. I’m sure revenge will be much sweeter if it comes in the final of a Major. Before her semi final against Zvonareva she had looked tired and had needed painkillers to help her cope with injury but like all champions she gets better at the end of tournaments.

This is Li’s first Grand Slam Final. How much sleep do you think she will be getting the nght before? She beat the world number 1 in the semi final too. Even though she has a winning record against Woz that win will add to her excitement.

Clijsters has been in this position so many times. She will be looking forward to the final and will have nerves but she will be better prepared and better rested. She has also indicated that she is looking to retire from the tour and so this may be her last Australian Open. She will want to end on a high infront of an Oz crowd who love her.

Li started slowly in her semi and Clijsters lost her first service game in hers so its hard to know what to do at the start. Ideally we do nothing and Kim struggles in her first game so we get a more attractive price to back her at. However if she gets off to the same start as in  their last final we will have missed the boat.

An option is to back Clijsters with a half or a third of your stake from the start. If Kim gets off to a flier at least we’ll see something for the trade. If Li breaks early then we can put the rest of our stake on Clijsters.

I expect a straight sets win for Clijsters.
