14:00 – Soderling v Monfils
Rankings are 14 and 5. Head to heads are 2-0 to Soderling.
Well, hands up who expected THIS final?
I wasn’t able to trade yesterday and am kicking myself for missing the Federer/Monfils match.
Having come back in the final set against Fed to beat one of the best players of all time Monfils has to feel on top of the world. It often happens that when a player beats one of the top 2 or 3 players that they suffer a drop in intensity in their next match. However in this case it is Monfils playing a final infront of a French crowd. The French crowds can be very intimidating and they will be trying to unsettle Soderling from the start. Soderling can be fragile under these circumstances although not as much as in the past.
Monfils would rather lose a leg than lose this final and he will be doing whatever it takes to come out on top.
Stats don’t always mean too much in finals especially when the 2 players are so even. For the record this week they have held serve 86% and 93%. There’s not much between them when it comes to return of serve although Soderling has converted more break point chances.
It doesn’t take a genius to predict at least 1 tie break in this one. For home advantage alone I am going with Monfils to take the title.
Back both on serve.
Update: Soderling won 6-1, 7-6. The crowd weren’t able tolive Monfils through the dip!
