Midnight – Stakhovsky v Istomin
Rankings are 47 and 46. Head to heads are 2-1 to Istomin. They also played in a qualifiers match that Istomin won.
I didn’t expect either of these players to be in the final. I missed the Istomin semi final but I have to say Stakhovsky fully deserves his place. Not only did he serve well and hit some great ground strokes but showed some wonderful touches around the net that are becoming almost the norm from him.
Throughout this week he has been head and shoulders above the rest but I felt De Bakker’s time had come for his first ATP final.
Istomin has been far more inconsistent and has been taken to three sets in his last 3 matches. In those 3 matches he has won the first set and then lost concentration in the second. If Troicki had held his nerve last night it would have been him lining up against Stakhovsky.
Over the past month their stats are surprisingly similar. Service holds are 82%/83%. First serve percentages are 62%/59%. They both win 37% o points against serve.
On form this week I have to give the edge to Stakhovsky. He has been much more reliable. Back him on serve.
