I’d say the men’s and women’s tournaments both have a semi final that was easy to predict and one that I doubt anyone predicted.
Djokovic v Nadal is without question the match of the day. Such a pity it is on at 1am!
Djokovic has won every time they played on a hard court for the past 3 seasons. Both their service stats are similar but Djokovic is ahead in the return department.
Nadal hasn’t dropped a set this week although Janowicz pushed him very close. Djokovic dropped a set to Istomin but I aren’t reading too much into that. The top players raise their games for the big matches and this one certainly qualifies.
Djokovic look a little low at 1.49 and an early break for Nadal would be great.
Djokovic in 3.
Update: Nadal won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
Who are you and what have you done with the real Sorana Cirstea? Wozniacki, Jankovic and Kvitova have all fallen victim to her run of form this week. her serve has been consistent and effective. Her ground strokes have found the lines and her nerve has held firm.
In the quarter final Kvitova took the opening set but Cirstea came back to take a late break in set 2 and totally controlled the third set.
Today is Li Na‘s turn to try to end her run. Li has won their last 2 meetings which were on hard courts. The most recent was at this season’s Australian Open and Li won easily in 2 sets.
Over the last month Li’s serve stats are much better although over fewer matches. Their return stats are the same over all but Li attacks the second serve more.
Cirstea did well for me ( and SHARK TIPS subscribers! ) against Jankovic. I didn’t trade last night but I think Cirstea will be having Sunday off. I would be surprised if she doesn’t manage to win a set.
Update: Somebody stop her! Cirstea won 6-1, 7-6.
Radwanska’s serve stats for her match with Errani were so poor. If she serves like that today it will be a massacre. Williams leads the head to heads 5-0 and on hard courts Radwanska managed just 3 games in each of them. The 2 hard court meetings were the most recent.
This will be very one sided.
Update: Radwanska’s serve was much improved and she kept this one close.
Williams won 7-6, 6-4.
The remaining semi is an all Canadian affair between big serving Pospisil and cheat Raonic.
Looking at how they have both served this week each set will be settled either by a tie break or by a single break. A small number of points will decide the match. Raonic is the favourite but value is with Pospisil.
Update: Raonic won 6-4, 1-6, 7-6.
