Rogers Cup – Final

18:30 – Murray v Federer

Rankings are 4 and 3. Head to heads are 6-5 to Murray. Federer has won their last 3 matches.

It’s not often Federer starts as underdog but Murray is 1.84 on Betfair.

Federer beat Murray in the Australian Open final this year. Murray won this tournament last year and looks in great form. Anyone who beats Nadal in straight sets is playing their best tennis.

Federer has been below his best but has found a way to win as all champions do. He usually steps up a gear or two for the big matches.

Which ever player can keep the intensity up will take this and even though I missed Murray’s win over Nadal I saw him against Nalbandian. There was no sign of his passive attitude ( although he looked half asleep for the first couple of games) and he was dictating play.

Federer has been really going after the second serves this week. Murray has been serving a little better than normal. His second serve is excellent but then it has had to be to make up for his poor first serve in the past. Federer won’t find it as easy to bully the Scot’s second serve.

Over the last 3 months they have held serve 85% and 90% of the time. Murray converts more break points than Fed who has struggled noticeably to take the BP opportunities in his last couple of matches.

I think Murray has a great chance today and he’ll regain his title. He will want to take a victory over Fed into the US Open and I think he will want the win more than Fed.

Back both on serve.

Slight bias shown from the commentator in one of their previous matches 🙂

Update: Murray made a fast start and was making Fed look very ordinary. the Scot raced to a 3-0 lead but Federer pulled him back to 5-5. Murray stayed strong and Fed made some strange errors on a couple of points to hand Murray a third break of serve. Murray took the first set.

The second set was interrupted several time with rain but it was Murray who held his concentration and he again went a break up. Federer onxce again pulled him back but Murray broke again and played an excellent game to serve out the set and take the match.

Murray won 7-5, 7-5.

  1. Hey TradeShark,

Wow, that Arabic commentator showing just a *little* bias, eh? I am not sure I have heard one like that 🙂

Incidentally, on your writeup, I think you meant to say that Murray will *retain* the title, since he already has it, he doesn’t have to “regain” anything… 🙂
