Rogers Cup – Friday

18:00 – Murray v Nalbandian

Rankings are 4 and 45. Head to heads are 2-0 to Nalbandian.

Murray almost blew it against Monfils. I didn’t watch the match but what on earth was he doing in the second set to lose it 6-0?

Nalbandian looked tired during his match with Soderling but his class pulled him through from being a set down. Towards the end of the match Soderling just had no answer to the Argentinian.

My only concern with Nalbandian is his fitness. He must be running on empty after a long week last week where he won the Legg Mason tournament. He has played 9 games in 9 straight days and most of them being against top players.

Murray is defending champion here and will lose points if he doesn’t defend the title. Is that enough motivation to get him past Nalbandian?

They have held serve 84% and 81% of the time over the last 3 months.First serve percentages aren’t great at 55% and 57%. Nalbandian has better stats against serve winning 49% of points to Murray’s 41%.

Murray will need to play well for the whole match. He tends to lose concentration and his first serve will go through a bad patch. Nalbandian is more than capable of taking advantage.

I think Nalbandian will fight to the end but I aren’t convinced that Murray will.

Back Nalbandian on serve.

Update: Nalbandian finally ran out of steam and played well below his recent level. Having said that Murray played well and deserved the win.

Murray won 6-2, 6-2.

Midnight – Berdych v Federer

Rankings are 7 and 3. Head to heads are 8-3 to Fed but Berdych has won their last 2 matches ( both in 2010).

Federer’s two matches this week have ended in exactly the same score, 7-6, 6-3.  In both of Berdych’s matches he has taken the first set quite easily.

Both men have held serve 90% of the time during the last 3 months. Fed’s first serve is more consistent at 64% to Berdych’s 57%.

Berdych received treatment for his knee in the last match. If he is suffering with that again today then Federer will take advantage. Federer will want a good run up to the US Open and will see a victory over Berdych as a positive sign having lost to him in their previous 2 matches. I’d expect Federer to be more focused from the first ball as he perhaps takes lower ranked players for granted at the start of matches.

Feder has been attacking second serves this week and he will definately be doing the same from the off today.

Back both on serve. I expect Federer to gain a little revenge today. Should be a great match.

Update: Definately a great match to watch. Fed started exceptionally well and it looked like it was going to be a short match. he took the opening set.

Then Berdych fought back into the match and took a tight second set with a late break.

In the deciding set Berdych seemed to be in control at 5-2. He served for the match at 5-3 but was broken. Fed pulled it back to a tie break which he took 7-5 having been 4-0 up.

Federer wins 6-3, 5-7, 7-6.
