Rome 2013, Wednesday

The betting tips were 2 for 2 yesterday with Verdaso at 1.70 and Vinci at 1.65 both winning in 3 sets.

Today’s prices are rubbish! Not a day to be taking anyone on SP. You have to love trading 😉

Vinci’s record at this event isn’t great and yesterday looked like being another first round exit. She wasn’t up to her normal level and I’m not sure she would have recovered from 0-3 in the third set if Vesnina hadn’t had a leg injury.

Today’s opponent is fellow Italian Burnett who took advantage of another poor performance from Cornet. She seemed to love the atmosphere although of course it’s easier to enjoy a match when you’re winning and your opponent is crying on court!

I think yesterday will have taken a lot out of Vinci and we have a chance of 3 sets if not an upset.

Update: Very fast start from Vinci. A lot of the games were close but she took the set 6-1. Burnett made more of a fight of it in set 2 but it wasn’t quite enough.

Vinci won 6-1, 6-4.

Tsonga should have too much for Janowicz but his start price of 1.33 isn’t very enticing. Watch out for a slow start from the Frenchman before backing at 1.60 or better.

Update: Janowicz’ serve was too much for Tsonga. There was just 1 break in the whole match.

Janowicz won 6-4, 7-6.

Paire and Benneteau both had excellent wins in the last round. Paire took down Monaco and Benneteau beat clay specialist Almagro in straight sets.

When Benneteau is fit and on his game he can beat almost anyone. I didn’t see the Almagro match but a win over him on clay is worthy of praise.

Paire was given a great deal of help by his opponent in his last match but did show some superb tennis.

I have to go with Benneteau in this one at at price of 2.30 . I don’t really understand why he is underdog.

Update: Benneteau did take the first set but Paire levelled at 1 set each. By the end of set 2 it was actually Benneteau who seemed to be serving best. That changed in the decider as Paire broke twice for a 4-1 lead. benneteau pulled back and served for the match at 6-5. He was broken and Paire took the tie break.

Paire won 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.

There is no doubt that Nishikori is a great player and fully deserves to be 15th in the world. Having said that he just seems to be a set away from injury at all times. Another MTO was called in his last match.

Chardy hasn’t enjoyed much success lately but almost all of his sets have been close. He came back from a set down in the last round against Lopez which suggests he is up for a fight. He is one of those players that can lurch from superb to pathetic in the space of a few games but I think he will give the Japanese player some problems today.

I will look to lay Nishikori if he goes a break up in the first set.

Update: Chardy was excellent from the service line and wasn’t broken in the whole match. He didn’t face a single break point.

Chardy won 6-5, 6-1.
