So here we are again. Their last 3 matches have all been finals and all have been taken by the Serb. Oddly the only one that was in straight sets was the one on clay last week in Madrid.
The market still won’t accept that Djokovic has a great chance. The courts in Madrid were almost as fast as some hard courts at times whereas Rome’s clay has been much slower. That means that real claycourt skills come into play.
Djokovic wass taken to 3 sets by Murray. The Scot had a chance to serve for the match but was broken. Djokovic easily took the tie break. He has had to fight so hard to maintain his 100% record for 2011 that you have to think it can’t last much longer.
The only set that Nadal has lost this week was bizarrely to Italian Lorenzi in the second round. He has reportedly fought off illness earlier in the week.
We also have the possibility of rain which would slow the court down further. Conditions even without rain are in the Spaniard’s favour. Djokovic will probably tire during the second set due to his long match with Murray that finished quite late. His legs have to be feeling heavy anyway with all the tennis he has played.
It’s time for a little revenge for Nadal. I feel Djokovic’s best chance must be to take the first set.
Update: If there was any doubt who is the top player on all surfaces then Djokovic cleared that doubt. Whether Rafa played below his best or Djokovic just has an answer for everything the Spaniard throws at him I aren’t sure.
Djokovic won 6-4, 6-4.
