Rome Masters – Thursday

14:00 – Tsonga v Giraldo

Rankings are 10 and 76. They haven’t played before.

Giraldo won a Challenger Tour event earlier this month (on clay). He has also reached the semi finals in another two Challenger events this year, one on clay and one on hard courts.

Tsonga is in good form and has to start as a strong favourite. Giraldo will put up more of a fight than Troicki did yesterday.

Back Tsonga on serve. I expect 2 tight sets.

Update:  Tsonga won 6-3, 6-4

16:00 – Ljubicic v F Lopez

Rankings are 15 and 35. Head to heads are 4-2 to Lopez.

Lopez has won their previous three matches including their only meeting on clay.

Ljubicic is in great form but needs his serve to be firing on all cylinders.

Lopez is a very consistent player especially on clay. He wins 86% of his service games.

Ljubicic wins 88% of his service games. This has three sets written all over it.

Back Ljubicic on serve. You can also back Lopez on serve but make sure you get out of the trade quickly if one of them looks like being broken.

Update: Ljubicic pulled out with a side strain before the match.

  1. I find the “alternative matches” advice most useful as I am not always able to find the time for the 2 main games. The short, sharp advice suits me great, thanks

    1. Great. Looks like I created more work for myself! A few people have said the same so I guess the alternatives will stay 🙂
