Saturday 25th August 2012 – The Finals

Just a short post as I’m taking the day off ( sort of).

Berdych came through against Querrey in straight sets. He looked shaky in the first set and Querrey continued to play well but was struggling in most of his service games. I lost count of the break points that the American saved. It was Querrey who broke in the very first game and he held on for most of the set but was finally broken. Berdych  proved too strong in the end.

Isner came through in a third set tie break against Tsonga to give himself a chance to defend his title.

Berdych won their last 2 matches which were in 2010 but were both on clay. Their only other meeting was the previous year and on a hard court. Isner won that one.

Berdych has been broken in his first service game in each of the last 2 rounds. Another slow start would be perfect as I think he will take the title from Isner. I will wait for Isner’s price to break through 1.65 before laying him. Berdych will get stronger as the match goes on.

In the WTA final Kvitova plays Kirilenko. Kiri reached the final thanks to a retirement from Woznicki who had looked to have a slight edge in the early games. Woz retired when Kirilenko took the set 7-5.

Kvitova, like many of the top seeds this week, doesn’t seem to be thinking ahead to the US Open. However you have to think she will want to finish this match in straight sets.

Kirilenko leads the head to head 3-2 and knocked Kvitova out of the Olympics.

Kvitova has won 5 finals in a row. Kirilenko has lost her last 3 final and its 2008 sine she won a title. She has improved her consistency immensely in the last 12 months but I think she will lose today.

I think we will see 2 close sets or maybe 3 but Kvitova will take the title.
