Saturday’s Matches

Soderling and Berdych face one another in the semi finals in Sweden.

Soderling leads the head to heads 8-4 and 2-1 on clay. He has won 6 of their last 7 matches. Neither player has lost a set so far and have similar recent records.

The head to head record certainly points to a Soderling win and  playing at home gives him a further edge but the starting price of 1.45 seems too low.  All three of their previous clay court matches went to the final set.

A lay of Soderling from the start would seem like a decent option, as would laying the first set winner. I’d expect Soderling to come through infront of a home crowd.

Update: Well who expected that? Soderling won 6-1, 6-0……

In the other semi final Almagro takes on Ferrer. Ferrer leads the head to heads 7-0.

Almagro had to play 2 matches yesterday which may affect his energy levels if this goes to 3 sets.  Almagro won this event last year but I think this is as far as he goes in 2011. Ferrer has looked too strong and its hard to see how Almagro gets his first win over his higher ranked countryman.

Ferrer starts at 1.30 which is a little low as Ferrer can often have a shaky first service game. I’ll back from the start with half stake and add the rest if Ferrer rises in the first 2 or 3 games.

I expect a straight sets win for Ferrer. There are rumours that Almagro has a leg injury and if that’s the case playing 2 matches in a day won’t have helped at all.
