Saturday’s matches

The final in Austria will be between Montanes and Haase.

Haase was very impressive in the early part of  his semi final with Souza. His serve was much more consistent and for a set and a half he looked in control. He needed 3 sets to book his place in the final.

Montanes beat top seed Chela in straight sets. He also served well so today’s match should be a close one.

Haase has won all 8 finals that he has reached. They were all Challenger titles though and he has yet to get his first main tour win.

Montanes has the better claycourt pedigree but presently they are quite equal. They are next to each other in the rankings at 51 and 52. Becasue it will be close the starting price on Montanes at 1.5 is too short. I will be laying him from the start.

Montanes has beaten better opponents this week so I am going with him for the win.

Update: The first 2 sets were close but Haase ran away with the final set to take the title 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Monfils v Isner

I watched the first set of Monfils’ match with Tipsarevic last night. Superb tennis from both players but Monfils was at his very best. Serving well and hitting incredible ground strokes, he will be tough for anyone to beat.

Isner has looked a little tired in his last 2 matches but has still been able to hit some big winners. Troicki isn’t the easiest of opponents and Isner has lost both their previous matches. Last night he had his first win over the Serbian in 3 sets.

This will be a great match but based on what I saw yesterday Monfils will take it.

Isner leads the head to heads 3-2 and their matches have NEVER been over in straight sets. 😉

Update: Monfils won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.
