Saturday’s matches

Murray v Fish:

Whilst Nadal was well below his best yesterday nothing should be taken away from Fish. He has been in exceptional form recently and has not only shown great skill on the court he has shown himself to be supremely fit.

Murray had a terrible match last week when he lost to Kevin Anderson in straight sets. This week has seen him in much better form. He needs to bring that form to its peak for this match.

Fish leads the head to heads 4-3 and has won their last 3 matches. Their last match was at this venue in 2010 where Fish won in a third set tie break. Both players have improved since that match but its Fish who has made the most dramatic improvement. He has been in inspired form and plays in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.

If there is any hint of Murray’s passive game plan then he won’t live with Fish. I think we will see 3 sets and I have to go with the American to reach the final.

Update: I didn’t expect Fish to suffer a let down after his win over Nadal. Perhaps he just finally ran out of steam but was well below the level we have seen from him lately. He had 2 break points to win the second set but wasted both. He also had chances in the tie break but it finally went to Murray.

Murray won 6-3, 7-6.

Djokovic wasn’t too impressive in the first few games against Monfils. That gave the Frenchman the opportunity to break him and Monfils was able to hold on to take the set. After that Djokovic improved and he was able to take the next 2 sets.

Berdych wasn’t expected to beat Federer and certainly not in straight sets. His win was due to a bad match from Fed but he still played a good match and took his opportunity.

Djokovic leads the head to heads 6-1. He hasn’t been at his best so far and there is an outside chance of Berdych taking a set but I don’t feel he will really believe he can beat the Serb.

I’d say Djokovic wins in 3 sets. lets hope Berdych takes the first one!

Update: Berdych quit after the first set. Djokovic won 7-5 (ret)

Sharapova leads the head to heads against Zvonareva 6-3 and has won their last 2 matches, both on hard courts. They haven’t played for 2 years and  Zvonareva has improved her game in that time and is now ranked 3 in the world.

Both have played well enough this week although Sharapova seems to be serving better. Whether she can keep up that standard is perhaps  doubtful and whilst this will be very close I am giving the edge to Zvonareva.

Update: Zvonareva took the first set but it was Sharapova who took the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Petkovic is 2-0 against Jankovic and I don’t expect JJ to get her first win today.

Jankovic has been in decent form but she has periods during matches when she seem incapable of stringing more than a couple of points together. Her last 2 matches went to 3 sets. She may be slightly fresher as she reached the semi final thanks to Peng withdrawing before the match.

Petkovic has lost just 1 set this week and has beaten Wimbledon champ Kvitova in straight sets.

Petkovic to win in 2 tight sets.

Update: Tight first set but Petkovic gave up in the second.

Jankovic won 7-6, 6-1.
